The glass artworks of Dale Chihuly can be found around every corner of Downtown Tacoma, as well as the Tacoma Art Museum and the Museum of Glass. You can also learn the art of glass blowing yourself, at the Tacoma Glassblowing Studio.
Long before the age of Chihuly, it was the age of candy in Tacoma. This is where the creator of the Mars Bar first got his start, after the original candy man of Tacoma, Almond Roca, launched his crunchy sweets in 1912. Another sweet fact of Tacoma lore: Irv Robbins (creator of Baskin Robbins) began his ice cream career here, in his father’s downtown ice cream shop.
But these days it’s all about coffee and craft beer. There are about as many coffee shops as there are roads in Tacoma, and nearly as many places to sip on local craft beers. The ultimate of the liquid libation celebrations happens in September, at the annual Tacoma Craft Beer Fest.
Tacoma residents appreciate the city's blend of vibrant arts, diverse neighborhoods, and access to outdoor activities, particularly along the waterfront. The culinary scene garners praise for its variety, while parks and museums are popular for family outings. Some locals highlight the challenges of public transportation options and traffic congestion, especially during peak hours. Overall, the mix of urban amenities and natural beauty contributes to a lively atmosphere, although parking can sometimes be a frustrating experience in busier areas.
Tacoma's 2025 rental market shows one-bedroom apartments averaging around $1,400 per month, while two-bedroom units rent for around $1,800 monthly. Both bedroom types remained relatively stable from the previous year, making them consistent options for renters planning their housing budgets.
March offers the lowest rental prices in Tacoma, with rents approximately 4% lower than September's peak pricing. While March brings increased competition from other renters, the potential savings make it an attractive time for apartment hunting despite the higher demand.
South End and New Tacoma lead Tacoma's rental scene with strong walk scores and well-developed street infrastructure supporting active lifestyles. North End and Central attract renters with excellent transit frequency and walkable layouts that encourage community interaction, while New Tacoma offers 349 listings representing 22% of the city's rental market.
South End and South Tacoma offer the most affordable options with one-bedroom apartments at around $1,300 monthly, running 11% below the city median. North End provides another budget-friendly choice at around $1,400 per month, just 4% under median rates while maintaining quality living standards.
Tacoma welcomes pets with 58% of rental listings offering pet-friendly policies, reflecting the city's accommodating attitude toward four-legged residents. North End, Northeast Tacoma, South Tacoma, and Eastside neighborhoods particularly cater to pet owners with specialized flooring, pet-safe windows, and generous outdoor spaces with convenient waste facilities.
Utilities are rarely included in Tacoma rental prices, with only about 23 total listings including utilities across all apartment types. This represents less than 1% of the city's rental inventory, meaning renters should budget separately for electricity, water, and other utility costs.
Zumper’s proprietary rental data fuels our analysis. Rent and market trends, availability, neighborhood popularity, and lifestyle scores are all calculated using real-time and 2026 rental inventory and prices.
Our Lifestyle Categories ("great for eco-living," "great for social life," "great for pet owners," etc.) are determined by set criteria, against which we score each listing and its available features. At the neighborhood level, we calculate the listing count for each category to determine which lifestyles best fit each area.
Zumper, founded in 2012, is North America’s largest privately-owned rental platform, offering over 1 million listings across the U.S. and Canada. Stay informed on the latest trends and shifts in the rental market with our monthly National Rent Report, your go-to resource for key insights into the evolving rental landscape.
