California is the most populated state in the US and is split into two main parts: Northern and Southern California. Between the two is Central California, a portion that differs from the other regions in climate, culture, and economic influences. Modesto sits squarely in the central part of the state and is known as an agricultural hub. The city was a stop on the railroad line that connected Los Angeles and Sacramento. Founders were going to name it Ralston, after a local financier, but he requested a change, and the town was named Modesto, which translates to “modesty” in Spanish.
Modesto sits on the Tuolumne River and is close to the Stanislaus River. Its climate includes hot, dry summers and mild winters with moderate rainfall. Approximately 200,000 people call it home, and a large portion of its residents work for E&J Gallo Winery, the largest winery in the world. Other employers include Modesto City Schools, Memorial Medical Center, and Kaiser Permanente. Several large companies operate here, including Acme Construction, 5.11 Tactical, and Foster Farms Dairy.
The Rockabilly musical genre started in Modesto when the Maddox Brothers & Rose formed on a local radio station in 1937. George Lucas, the creator of Star Wars, was born and raised in the city and attended Modesto Junior College. He also created the film “American Graffiti” in 1973, which paid homage to Modesto and immortalized what life was like there in the mid-20th century.
Several historical structures remain in Modesto today, along with modern shopping and dining areas that make it an ideal place to call home.
