Situated in California's Central Valley, Lodi is a smaller city that's well-known for its wine grape production and welcoming atmosphere for all residents. Approximately 67,000 people call it home, ranking it at spot number 132 on the list of cities in California by population. The city's motto is “Livable, Lovable, Lodi," although it's more well-known as the Zinfandel capital of the world.
A group of families living nearby established a school in the mid-19th century that was in what is now known as Lodi. The school was on Turner Road and Cherokee Lane. Around the same time, the Central Pacific Railroad was establishing a new route, and locals offered land in exchange for a stop along the route. The area was first called Mokelumne, although the name changed due to confusion with other similarly named towns nearby.
A vote incorporated the city in 1906, followed by the establishment of the fire department and the construction of additional public buildings. Lodi received national attention when the popular band, Creedence Clearwater Revival, released a song named for the city. It also earned the designation of “Wine Region of the Year” in 2015 from Wine Enthusiast Magazine.
In its early days, Lodi relied heavily on cattle ranching, a flour mill, orchards, and a sawmill to boost its economy. The local vineyards also support economic growth, particularly with the introduction of the Flame Tokay grape from Algeria. The sandy loam soil that's native to this region also plays a role in the success of vineyards and wineries. Major corporations that operate in the city include Holz Rubber Company, Miller Packaging Company, Blue Shield of California, and Dart Container.
With a small-town feel and a fascinating history, Lodi is certainly a unique part of California.
