The first thing you may notice about Virginia Beach is the 34-foot bronze statue of King Neptune towering over the gateway to the sea. This heroic protector watches over the pristine beaches, calls the fish into Chesapeake Bay, and poses for many magnificent Virginia Beach selfies. Beloved by tourists and locals alike, the annual Neptune Festival attracts over 500,000 visitors to the beach - a formidable party for the god of the sea.
The next thing you may notice is a very, very loud noise. Don’t worry, it’s not an angry sea god, it’s just fighter jets flying in the skies. Virginia Beach is home to several military bases, and the aerial training is something you’ll come to appreciate as you marvel at the mini air shows.
Virginia Beach has plenty of surprises in store for you. There are fireworks twice a week. There’s the East Coast Surfing Championships. There are beer, music and wine festivals, volleyball competitions, ridiculously awesome restaurants and ice cream shops, as well as some choice fishing spots. Virginia Beach has lush farmlands, and as a result, some of the best organic produce available in local stores and farmers markets. There is comfort food, seafood and even sushi (try the Mizuno Japanese Restaurant on Laskin Road). There is reggae, blues and matzo balls at The Jewish Mother - a deli by day and live-music bar by night. And you never know when you might run into a pop-up circus on the beach.
Despite the many attractions calling people to Virginia Beach, the city maintains a small-town charm that is just downright beautiful. We think you’re going to love it here!

Many appreciate the dining scene and the proximity to both urban amenities and the ocean. Traffic can be an issue during peak tourist season, which frustrates some locals. Families note the good schools and friendly neighborhoods, though others mention that rental prices can be on the higher side, making it challenging for some to find affordable housing. Overall, the local atmosphere leans towards a laid-back coastal lifestyle, with a mix of residents who enjoy both relaxation and community events.

Zumper’s proprietary rental data fuels our analysis. Rent and market trends, availability, neighborhood popularity, and lifestyle scores are all calculated using real-time and 2024 rental inventory and prices.
Our Lifestyle Categories ("great for eco-living," "great for social life," "great for pet owners," etc.) are determined by set criteria, against which we score each listing and its available features. At the neighborhood level, we calculate the listing count for each category to determine which lifestyles best fit each area.
Zumper, founded in 2012, is North America’s largest privately-owned rental platform, offering over 1 million listings across the U.S. and Canada. Stay informed on the latest trends and shifts in the rental market with our monthly National Rent Report, your go-to resource for key insights into the evolving rental landscape.
