One of the absolute worst things about living here is being on the first floor. The laundry room has no hours, yet the laundry machines are in the basement which echoes across the entire ground floor, making it really hard to sleep at a decent hour.... and by "decent", I mean sometime before 1 am. There's no signage anywhere reminding tenants and guests about quiet hours (10 pm), and so it's a daily occurence to hear VERY LOUD TALKING, groups of inconsiderate people RUNNING UP THE STAIRS at all hours of the day and night, neighbors moving furniture until 2 or 3 am--- it's a lot. The noise is the #1 worst thing about this place. Now, I know what you're probably thinking: "duh! All old buildings are noisy!", but I'm here to tell you that this one takes first place at State for noise levels. In part, it's due to the big empty basement with 0 insulation between it and the first floor. There are plenty of products to apply to the subfloor which could mitigate this. It's cheap and lazy not to even try. Next, there's the big, heavy doors which need to be lubricated to keep them from making excess noise. Each time someone enters the building, loud creaking cracking clunking door. Each time they enter the stairwell, loud creaking cracking clunking door at bottom AND top of stairs. And again when they reach their apartment door. Then there's the placement of the stairwell: the worst. Seriously. It's central to the entire north half of the building. So effing noisy. This area is noisy even on the street due to endless "maintenance", which frequently causes precious parking spaces in front of the building to be closed off for whole days almost every week. Constant vehicle maneuvering noise, crazed homeless screams on Kearney at night, homeless hopping the side fences to rummage through the trash late at night--- some peace and quiet within the building would be really nice. It's a shame because the neighborhood is pretty cool.
