With the nickname "Queen City of the Ozarks," there's little doubt that Springfield is one of the most unique and charming cities in Missouri. It's the birthplace of the famous Route 66, which spans 2,448 miles across multiple states. There are also numerous career opportunities and great attractions in this city.
Location
Springfield is located in scenic southwest Missouri, approximately 149 miles from Kansas City. It contains many universities, including Missouri State University, Drury University, and Evangel University. It's also home to a number of sports teams, such as the Missouri State Bears and the Springfield Cardinals. Several attractions draw visitors from across the country, such as Wilson's Creek National Battlefield, which offers tours of the first major battle of the Civil War, and the ancient Fantastic Caverns, a cave filled with massive formations.
History
The city has a long and fascinating history. Originally, Native American tribes like the Kickapoo, Delaware, and Osage set up their civilization in the area. William Fulbright and his family took up 160 acres in 1830, and Fulbright erected the first cabin built in what became Springfield. Officials incorporated the area in 1838, and it kept growing in size over the next century.
Fun activities
From art museums to beautiful parks, there's plenty to do in Springfield. Grant Beach is a popular place to congregate in the spring and summer months, with its large swimming pool, playground, tennis courts, ballfield, and basketball court.
With the charm of a quiet Midwest town and the hustle of a larger city, Springfield is the perfect medium between urban living and the slower, friendly countryside. Communities like Quail Creek feature a quiet, open atmosphere within close distance to some of the city's finest establishments. The vibrant culture has also led to plenty of population growth here.
Springfield, MO, offers a mix of urban and suburban living that residents appreciate for its affordability and variety of amenities. Many enjoy the local dining scene and proximity to parks, making outdoor activities easily accessible. Families often mention the quality of schools, which adds to the area's appeal. However, some residents express concerns about traffic congestion and noise in more populated neighborhoods, which can detract from the overall atmosphere. Despite these complaints, the community vibe and local events keep many engaged in city life.
Springfield's 2025 rental market shows one-bedroom apartments averaging around $920 per month, while two-bedroom units average around $1,100 monthly. These figures represent the current market rates across the city's diverse neighborhood options.
December offers the best opportunity for Springfield apartment hunters, featuring the lowest rents of the year and the least competitive market conditions. June sees the highest rents and most competition, with approximately a 6% difference between peak and off-peak rental prices.
Springfield's most sought-after neighborhoods include Southern Hills, which generates 1.2 times more consumer interest than average, along with Westside Community Betterment and West Central. Downtown Springfield, Phelps, and Walnut Street attract social renters with high walk scores and robust restaurant scenes.
Southern Hills offers the most affordable option with a median rent of around $880, followed by Midtown at around $900. West Central provides budget-friendly alternatives starting at around $800, making these neighborhoods ideal for cost-conscious renters.
Springfield welcomes pet owners with 56% of rental listings offering pet-friendly policies. Fairfield Acres, Webster Park-Shady Dell, Northwest Springfield, and Southeast Springfield provide excellent options with pets without restrictions policies and convenient access to pet services.
Utilities are rarely included in Springfield rental properties, appearing in less than 1% of total listings across all bedroom types. One-bedroom apartments have the highest rate at 0.07% of listings, while other bedroom sizes show even lower percentages.
Zumper’s proprietary rental data fuels our analysis. Rent and market trends, availability, neighborhood popularity, and lifestyle scores are all calculated using real-time and 2026 rental inventory and prices.
Our Lifestyle Categories ("great for eco-living," "great for social life," "great for pet owners," etc.) are determined by set criteria, against which we score each listing and its available features. At the neighborhood level, we calculate the listing count for each category to determine which lifestyles best fit each area.
Zumper, founded in 2012, is North America’s largest privately-owned rental platform, offering over 1 million listings across the U.S. and Canada. Stay informed on the latest trends and shifts in the rental market with our monthly National Rent Report, your go-to resource for key insights into the evolving rental landscape.
