We have been living at the Esplanade going on 3 years now. It's been great so far, love the neighborhood, the community, and the amenities. One of the best parts is the staff, particularly Stephen in leasing. He leased us our first apartment here and was a big reason why we signed. Since then Stephen has been so helpful with anything we've needed and has been extremely helpful with our lease renewals, making sure to help us get exactly what we needed. Thank you!

During my 5-year stay at The Esplanade, I greatly valued Stephen Watkins' support and the assistance of the maintenance team, especially Jose. As others have noted, Stephen's transition to a remote corporate office negatively impacted the community and contributed to my decision to move. The sense of community and connection that Stephen fostered was lost when the office went remote. As a newcomer to the Bay Area, his presence provided much-needed support and guidance, akin to that of family and friends. The absence of an on-site office also made understanding the amenities operations more difficult. For instance, not having someone to explain that a code is required to use the grills could easily lead to confusion. Often, the hot tub would be out of service, and the gym left a lot to be desired if that is something that is important. The apartments themselves are spacious and provide an Airbnb-like aesthetic. The locks and thermostats are smart, and appliances are all electric. The covered garage for us was greatly appreciated. Compared to other, even pricier options nearby, this is a solid choice. The main reason you'd be interested in the Esplanade is the location. It has convenient access to Japantown, major supermarkets, and the airport. It's across the street from the Japantown Farmers' Market and Summer Night Market -- two staples in the community. Noise can be an issue (after all, it is a city), but it was especially unfortunate that loud parties would take place in the pool area during the summer. Random people would also frequently hop the fence to use the pool area and let others in. Security is not a high priority for the Esplanade but luckily, we had no safety issues while we lived there. The maintenance team, including Jose, is very responsive to repair requests. They are very hardworking and friendly. We will miss this team and hope anyone who considers the Esplanade has good manners and is kind to them. Initially, the move-out process was unclear due to reliance on email communication with a centralized office. This sometimes led to misunderstandings that could have been avoided with on-site staff. However, once I spoke with someone directly, the process went smoothly. It's important to note that the apartment must be returned in clean condition, and professional cleaning may be required to meet standards. Residents are not responsible for carpets after 5 years or walls after 3 years. Rent increases of 5-10% annually were a concern, especially considering the outdated and easily broken amenities. Despite these issues, I enjoyed my time at The Esplanade.
