The Menil Collection makes a great starting point to explore the artsy roots of Neartown - Montrose. This world-class private collection of 20th-century visual art was designed by Renzo Piano. The de Menil family made admission completely public and free of charge in perpetuity. The art emphasizes iconoclasts ranging from Marcel Duchamp and Henri Matisse to Cy Twombly and Andy Warhol.

The Rothko Chapel sits across the street; the abstract painter designed the tiny non-denominational worship space with rich black canvases that create a unique and intriguing experience. Nearby you can find the surreal Dan Flavin installation with fluorescent lights decorating an industrial space.

Looking for nightlife? The bar scene centered around Montrose and Westheimer features many of Houston’s most iconic restaurants and clubs. Many bars such as Rudyard’s British Pub double as concert venues, while Poison Girl features a “life-size” Kool-Aid man in the backyard.

Life in the neighborhood also revolves around fantastic dining and antique shopping. Many people center their apartment search on Neartown - Montrose just for the laid-back weekends having brunch ceviche at Hugo’s and rummaging for finds at the Westheimer Flea Market.

The neighborhood is also home to plenty of green spaces, too, including the University of St. Thomas campus (where it’s also easy to find large 2 bedroom or 3 bedroom apartments). This very walkable and bike-friendly area offers plenty of bike lanes and fast access to Buffalo Bayou and Discovery Green, two of Houston’s best park spaces.

Visit the bayou along Waugh Drive around sunset and you can witness the breathtaking sight of a quarter million bats making their daily pilgrimage to go find food. Houston is wilder than most outsiders realize, and the heart of that personality sits right in Neartown - Montrose.
