Brooklyn is the most populous of the five boroughs and over 2.5 million people live there. In fact, if it were a city of its own it would be the fourth most populous city in the USA. (It was once its own city, before it merged with New York in 1898). It is located on the western side of Long Island and the East River waterfront offers some truly gorgeous views of the Manhattan skyline.
There are many advantages to living in Brooklyn, including the lower average rent – which means that you will be able to afford a larger apartment with more amenities including laundry, dishwashers and private outdoor space. This neighborhood is experiencing a period of growth and rebirth and the art, theatre, music and culinary scenes are thriving.
There are many funky independent art galleries, unique restaurants and cafes, quirky museums, pubs serving craft beer and locally owned boutiques. The Brooklyn Museum has some fantastic collections of Western and non-Western art and Pierogi is a hip art space in Williamsburg that features illustration, photography and drawing. When it comes to independent boutiques you can check out Mociun, which is a Williamsburg store that sells jewelry designed by the owner, as well as other crafts from artisans. In God We Trust is another quirky boutique shop with retro-inspired clothing. It’s an exciting and beautiful place to live, with so much to see and do.
Brooklyn has a dazzling array of foods from all over the world, so bring your appetite. For fantastic Jewish delicatessen food inspired by our Canadian neighbors in Montreal, check out Mile End in Boerum Hill where you will find Montreal-style cured brisket and deliciously chewy bagels. One of the best Chinese restaurants is Pacificana, which offers amazing dim sum including congee, buns, dumplings and shrimp rolls.
Brooklyn, NY, is known for its vibrant culture and diverse neighborhoods, where locals appreciate the variety of restaurants, parks, and arts events. Many enjoy the active community life and the accessibility of public transportation, making it easy to explore the city. However, residents often express concerns about rising rental prices and the challenge of finding affordable housing, which can make living in certain areas feel out of reach for many.
Zumper’s proprietary rental data fuels our analysis. Rent and market trends, availability, neighborhood popularity, and lifestyle scores are all calculated using real-time and 2024 rental inventory and prices.
Our Lifestyle Categories ("great for eco-living," "great for social life," "great for pet owners," etc.) are determined by set criteria, against which we score each listing and its available features. At the neighborhood level, we calculate the listing count for each category to determine which lifestyles best fit each area.
Zumper, founded in 2012, is North America’s largest privately-owned rental platform, offering over 1 million listings across the U.S. and Canada. Stay informed on the latest trends and shifts in the rental market with our monthly National Rent Report, your go-to resource for key insights into the evolving rental landscape.
The average size of a 1 bedroom apartment rental in Brooklyn is 305 square feet. The average size of a 2 bedroom apartment rental in Brooklyn is 412 square feet. The average size of a 3 bedroom apartment rental in Brooklyn is 605 square feet.
