The Bronx is nicknamed “The Boogie Down” and it is the only one of the five New York City boroughs that is mainly located on the mainland rather than on an island. The Bronx received its name in the 1600s, when a Swedish settler named Jonas Bronck purchased the land. It was called “The Bronck’s Land” and the name stuck. The district has a lot of hills and many streets have sections with steps rather than sidewalks, similar to San Francisco.
This New York borough has its own distinctive character and it is known for the New York Yankees and also for being the birthplace of hip hop and rap music. There is a diverse ethnic population here, including many residents of Italian and Puerto Rican heritage. It is a vibrant and unique neighborhood and a lively and fun place to live.
