We were the first to move into Denizen Apartments with a warm welcome from Katie and her team, who have been super helpful and responsive since day 1. I’ve lived here for almost 3 years and wish I could have stayed longer. The building and apartments are modern and clean. Special shoutout to Gabe from facilities who goes up and beyond his duties. THANKS. We really enjoyed our stay thank you for making us feel at home.

I would like to personally thank 4 member of the Gallery 459 Team who were extremely professional, kind, and diligent throughout my entire transition! Nesi Finau, Alexandria Peters, Issac Pena, and Luis Zepeda were nothing short of amazing!! My family would like to especially thank Nesi and Alexandria for their detailed follow ups, and overall knowledge of this business. Please give them a raise!
I had the easiest time applying to and moving into Denizen and have had a really pleasant experience here since I moved in in April 2021. I'm moving now because my fiancee and I are getting a house together. Otherwise I would have stayed here indefinitely for a number of reasons:
1) It is extremely close to my work. In fact, it's a five minute walk door-to-door.
2) Though the building has it's malfunctions with things that are electronic or operated by phone, the staff is on top of things to make sure the issues are addressed or fixed immediately. Katie Sheriff, the manager, has been stellar on getting back to me regarding my requests and concerns.
3) The maintenance team is responsive and quick in getting service requests done. My oven/stove broke down on a Wednesday and was replaced that same day.
4) The neighborhood and neighbors are friendly and, rather than having kids, they have lots of dogs. And we all know, dogs are the best and way better than children.
But seriously, this is the first time I lived in an apartment and knew everyone (and their dogs) on a first name basis.
5) Though the neighborhood can get a little loud sometimes, the area Denizen is located in has a lot of restaurants, gyms, events (First Friday, for one), music venues, BART, buses, downtown, freeways, to name a few.
6) Though pricey, you get what you pay for: Denizen is clean, high tech and operates smoothly.
If you're single or a couple and are social, Denizen - or the entire Gallery 459 apartments - are for you. I had a great time here and will miss it immensely. Simple, smooth, efficient living for busy and outgoing people.
Living at the Denizen for the last few years has been simply wonderful. Management has been extremely helpful and accommodating through the years. Especially Katie, who has always been outstanding from day one. The rest of the staff have always been friendly and helpful as well, and I would have stayed longer if I could. If you’re moving to uptown Oakland, I would definitely recommend the Denizen.
I’ve been living here for a year and it’s been a great experience. Katie (leasing office) has been an awesome contact to work with - she’s super responsive when tenants have questions, and I’ve found the same to be true of maintenance. Management was also very understanding when it came time to renew my lease.
This was my first time living in California; and staying at the denizen definitely made all the difference.
Would highly recommend this building, especially if you’re new to the area. I tend to prefer smaller apartment complexes - this one was the right fit for me.
Very reasonable rent and a good location with plenty of bars, restaurants, bakeries, etc around the neighborhood within walking distance
I've lived in Denizen for just over a year and honestly, it's a VAST improvement over the last building I was in (also downtown).
Here's what I like about Denizen:
✅LOCATION. Centrally located with GREAT access to supermarkets, restaurants, bars, gyms, and transit, all within 10 minutes walking distance, honestly, Denizen is hard to beat. Easy access to highways too!
✅PEOPLE. Katie in the leasing office has been here since the management company has changed and she's worked incredibly hard to ensure that our time here has been excellent! She's super approachable and communicative, which I deeply value
✅SPACE. I'm paying a little less than at my last building, but the apartment is MUCH bigger
✅SOUND. Sure, I can occasionally hear my upstairs neighbor vacuum, but it's faint even at its loudest. I hear nothing on either side. When the windows are shut and sealed, the noise from the street is minimal, even if it's a 1st Friday.
✅SECURITY. Denizen has worked hard to ensure that the front gate, as well as the garage entrances are secure and in good working order. Upgrades have integrated with systems used by residents and have made things measurably better.
✅NEIGHBORS. Everyone I've met has been great!
Of course, it's a real place, so sometimes things happen. So far, Katie and her team have been willing to work with us to ensure that everything is as we've agreed it should be.
I should also mention that this building has no amenities, other than a communal outdoor area with some tables, chairs, and a grill, but honestly I didn't end up using the amenities at my last place and frankly, don't miss them.
If I had to name one negative, I'd have to say that sometimes trash doesn't get picked up as quickly as I would hope. That said, it does get picked up and Katie has asked that we inform her if it isn't picked up in a timely fashion, or according to the days listed for service.
Overall, I'm happy enough that I'll be signing another lease with Denizen. If you're looking for a balance of affordability (relatively speaking, of course), location, and value, Denizen is definitely worth checking out!
