Lincoln, Nebraska was founded as the village of Lancaster in 1856, and by 1859 was named the county seat of the recently formed Lancaster County. The village was also selected as the capital of Nebraska Territory, partly because of its marshes and salt flats. In an attempt to prevent the moving of the capital from Omaha to Lancaster, the name of the village was changed to Lincoln, in honor of the recently assassinated President. However, the name change didn't stop the legislature from moving the capital to the new city.
Unlike the majority of large Nebraska cities, Lincoln is not located along the Missouri River or the Platte River. The landscape ranges from saline wetlands to gently rolling hills, and the demographics are typical of a mid-sized city. The main economy is derived from the service industry, with the government and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln providing the majority of the jobs. Other employment opportunities include truck and rail transport, insurance companies, call centers, information technology, banking and medical industries. On the Gallup-Healthways list, Lincoln grabbed the no. 1 spot as the "Happiest and Healthiest" city in America in 2013.
