You might be forgiven if you were driving into Boise City, Idaho, and didn't immediately connect with the moniker "City of Trees." Set in the Treasure Valley of the High Desert, it's an arid region. The name traces back to early settlers who, after miles and miles of dry country, came upon the tree-lined Boise River. These days, there are thousands of trees that have been planted all over the city, with farmland surrounding it. Still, it's a striking sight, seeing the stark browns of the hills in the background with the sharp green color of the trees in the fore.
It's the dry climate that drove the settling of towns like Boise City throughout the region. Where there was water, people could settle. Sure, there were usually other factors as well, but towns simply couldn't exist out here in earlier times without access to water. It was the Boise River that allowed the small settlement to grow into a thriving city of nearly a quarter million people today. The river is just one of the great recreation focal points here. From snow skiing at nearby Bogus Basin to hiking the remote Owyhee backcountry south of the metro area, this is a region where outdoors is more than just scenery. Of course, Boise City is a cosmopolitan city as well, with a thriving local music scene, great restaurants, bustling nightlife and sports. The city has also become a regional business center with several big companies calling it home. The most notable are supermarket giants Albertsons and WinCo. Boise Cascade, as well as J.R. Simplot and Micron Technologies.
