UPDATE 11/13: I changed the rating from 4 to 5☆s today; I got my FULL SECURITY DEPOSIT BACK PLUS INTEREST. Seriously, why is everyone else complaining...? The receipt for move out inspection says "UNIT WAS CLEAN!" I am extremely disappointed to see the careless reviews of others here as I write this. Maybe some of the priors could use a reality check.... For the 3 years my wife and I resided at 233 Oak Grove Street, mostly pleasant things can be said. I will start with management: Jessica has been compassionate, helpful and truly shaped us into responsible renters, early in our lives. Maintenance: if you are on top of your maintenance requests, many and possibly ALL issues can be resolved with your apartment unit. The maintenance people are good at their jobs and highly skilled. Caretakers: dilligent, smart, and skilled individuals who are easy to befriend and great neighbors to call on for a variety of reasons. Treat your caretakers with respect and you will have great friends to recollect on. The halls, walls and rooms are as old as city life itself. It is a classic way of apartment living. CLASSIC being the key word. This is not a place to dump your newly annointed college student adult-child and expect that you can close your eyes and nothing will go wrong. Every unit that is in turnover gets a fresh coat of paint, light remodeling and a good floor refurbishing. Plan your leasing early on rather than later. You will find that good communication and planning leads to a smooth entry and exit, not to mention an apartment conditioned to your expectations. Last, the neighborhood is a gem. There is no neighborhood like this one ANYWHERE in the Twin Cities. The Urban Space that you experience stepping out of the buildings has the feel of entering a room outside the building, like an extension of your home. Few communities can develop such a profound place-based feeling of the urban withour abhorently gentrifying the surroundings and erroding the social fabric of a community. This here is the real deal. 233 Oak Grove Street has deep history; my professors and colleagues at the U of M all put in a number of years living in this building at some point, and so have many of our friends. Many lives were lived here. You can have a legendary experience too, if the right steps are taken.

DO NOT RENT HERE Management is awful. I lived here for two years, was never once late on rent, never received a noise complaint (or any complaint for that matter), and never gave them any trouble. One day, I had a couple of friends over who happened to be African-American. A miserable old woman named by the name of Dawn who works at the front desk happened to see them come in with me and quite visibly gave them a dirty look. A day later I received a letter under my door "reminding" me of the no drug policy all tenants are required to sign along with a threatening message saying she would call the police if she saw "suspicious" people and/or activities in my apartment. Never once did I use or posses drugs in that building and she had no reason to think so. This was strictly based on the time she saw my black friends. DO NOT RENT FROM OR SUPPORT THESE RACIST SCUM BAGS. Many other who have dealt with Dawn (from KMS) have told my similar stories and I've encouraged them to write reviews and call the housing authority. Good luck in your apartment search. Avoid giving these bigots your money if at all possible.
