uilt in 1937 by Henry S. Forman & Alexander Douglass, the four story red brick row house’s classic original architectural details have been meticulously preserved. The buildings became a coop in 1978 & now consist of 4 apartments in each building. Bethune Street is a prime example of the quiet, tree-lined historic streets that are characteristic of this neighborhood. Its historic pedigree is impeccable: famous photographer Walker Evans lived at 23 Bethune & Diane Arbus was a member of the artist colony at 77 Bethune, which previously was the Western Electric Labs. The vacuum tube, radars, sound films, and the first digital computer were all invented in this building. It was also the location of the first television transmission. Another famous resident on Bethune Street was Kurt Vonnegut’s character Howard Campbell, from his novel Mother Nights. 21-23 Bethune Street is situated superbly with everything that the coveted West Village has to offer in close proximity.
