Medford is a moderately populated city located in the southwestern part of Oregon and Bear Creek's middle ford. The city's motto is “Heart of the Rogue,” which references its position in the Rogue Valley, which sits between the Siskiyou Mountains and the Cascade Range. Although the state of Oregon is known for receiving extensive rainfall throughout the year, Medford's climate is sunnier and drier than the surrounding cities. It sits about 27 miles north of the California border and includes nearly 28 square miles.
Railroad surveyors established the area now known as Medford and much of the surrounding region. Their goal was to find the best route that traveled through the Rogue Valley between Oregon and California. One of Medford's earliest buildings, a post office, was constructed in the late 19th century. Over the years, the city grew quickly and now has over 85,000 residents.
The health care industry is the primary driver of the economy. Over 2,000 residents work for the two major medical facilities, Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center and Provide Medford Medical Center. The economy also relies on agriculture and timber. Harry and David Operations Corp., the country's largest marketer of food and fruit gifts, is based in the city and employs over 6,500 seasonal workers.
Recently, the city of Medford partnered with private investors to renew its urban areas, including the historic downtown neighborhood. A number of rundown and underutilized structures benefited from the revitalization efforts, resulting in new growth in the downtown area.
Many Medford locals enjoy an outdoor-focused lifestyle and use the various parks and green spaces, including the famous Claire Hanley Arboretum.
