Situated on the western shores of Lake Winnebago, Oshkosh is a city in Wisconsin known for hosting many of the state's cultural events. As part of Winnebago County, it offers access to the banks of the Fox River and Lake Butte des Morts. Nearly 100,000 people call it home, although its earliest settlers were members of the Native American Menominee Nation. The city was named for a Native American chief who once resided there. The word “Oshkosh” means claw.
Fires destroyed many of the original structures in the downtown area, although some of the reconstructed buildings still stand today. In its early days, the economy of Oshkosh relied heavily on the lumber and wood industry, leading to the nickname of the “Sawdust Capital of the World.” However, the city now relies on other industries, including local events and tourism.
One of the city's largest corporations is OshKosh B'Gosh, a children's apparel manufacturer that has been in operation since 1895. During its founding, the small company manufactured adult work apparel, but has since grown to become a brand beloved by children and parents worldwide. Current companies that operate in Oshkosh include the Experimental Aircraft Association and Oshkosh Corporation, a manufacturer and marketer of specialty automotive products.
Oshkosh hosts many local, national, and international events every year, drawing thousands of visitors. One major event is the EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, the largest airshow in the world. Other popular events held in the city include the WaterFest, a summertime live music festival, and a yacht and boat race. The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, the state's third-largest university, also has a campus in downtown Oshkosh.
There's so much to see and do in and around Oshkosh, Wisconsin, for residents and visitors alike.
