Hello from sunny Bakersfield, California! Located northwest of Los Angeles, this city is a hub for the agriculture industry. The area surrounding Bakersfield is largely known for its production of the country’s supply of carrots, among other crops. Kern County is also known as the energy capital of California, thanks to its massive oil and gas production. But those interested in sustainable energy careers can find jobs here, too, since the area produces over 50% of the state's renewable energy.

Bakersfield is also a great city for music, arts, and culture. If you're a fan of country music, you'll fall in love with the "Bakersfield Sound," the original honky-tonk country music with a seriously cool rock 'n' roll vibe. Head to Buck Owens' Crystal Palace for some live tunes and line dancing in the "Country Music Capital of the West." You can also learn how musicians like Buck Owens and Merle Haggard transformed the genre at the Kern County Museum or the Bakersfield Music Hall of Fame.

Art lovers should visit the Downtown Arts District, where you'll find many art galleries, the historic art deco Fox Theater, and the Bakersfield Museum of Art a few blocks away. This city also provides many beautiful outdoor spaces to explore, and you'll find a lot of like-minded outdoorsy folk. Hiking and biking are popular activities in the Central Valley, and you can join clubs for both activities. Some of the best places for amazing views and challenging adventures include Panorama Bluffs Park, Hart Memorial Park, and Wind Wolves Preserve.

What are some of the top neighborhoods in Bakersfield, CA?

Downtown Bakersfield
Downtown is the centerpiece of Central Bakersfield. Here, you will find Central Park, the Rabobank Arena, and the Bakersfield Museum of Art. The historic Fox Theater is also located here, which hosts live music in its Colonial-Art Deco style digs. Just north of Downtown Bakersfield is the Kern County Museum, best known as the final resting place of the Haggard Family Boxcar, and to the east you’ll find the Pyrenees Cafe, a laid-back bar with live music and amazing food.
Fruitvale
Fruitvale and other neighborhoods north of the Kern River have old school Bakersfield soul. This is the side of town where you’ll find Trout’s Nightclub, a local honky tonk where Merle Haggard and Buck Owens got their start. In fact, Buck Owens was so fond of this side of Bakersfield that he returned to build the Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace, complete with a museum of iconic country music statues and memorabilia, and a 1970’s Pontiac convertible known as “The Buckmobile” parked behind the bar.
City in the Hills
Northeast Bakersfield is full of fertile farmlands, cow pastures, old ranch homes and rolling hills. Closer to the city center is College Heights, a laid-back campus neighborhood with both newer rentals and vintage homes from the 1950’s. The landscape turns to country side the farther northeast you travel, until you reach the enormous 1,000+ acre Kern County Park on the eastern Bakersfield city limits. Here, you’ll find wide-open public lands along the Kern River, with plenty of space to hike, fish, barbecue or just kick back and do a little guitar pickin’.
The Oaks
Southwest Bakersfield is where the oaks-folks live. The Oaks, River Oaks, Seven Oaks, and Southern Oaks neighborhoods are all located here, backing up to the Kern River. There is a small college crowd from nearby California State University - Bakersfield, as well as plenty of families that enjoy laid-back living near great local parks and watering holes. Favorite dives and diners include the Lengthwise Brewing Company, Salty’s BBQ, and B Ryder’s Sports Bar. The Park at Riverwalk is also located on this side of town, with 32-acres of hiking and biking trails, bbq pits, and a waterfront amphitheater which hosts live music and movie screenings (and it’s BYOB!).
Greenfield
Greenfield is one of many quiet, rural, family-oriented neighborhoods on the south side of Bakersfield. There’s not a whole lot going on down here, and that’s how the locals like it, but there are some really awesome soccer fields at the Bakersfield Sports Village Soccer Complex.
