Chicago rent prices cooled off last month. The city dropped one spot in our national ranking, behind Los Angeles, to the 8th most expensive market in the nation. Prices for one bedroom units decreased 3.6% to a median of $1,870, while two bedroom units decreased 2.6% to a median of $2,550.

Near North Side ($2,150), Loop ($2,080), and Near West Side ($2,080) are the most expensive Chicago neighborhoods to rent this winter. If you’re looking to live by the water at less expensive rates, Lakeview ($1,310), Uptown ($1,250), and Edgewater ($1,180) are more affordable options.
The least expensive Chicago neighborhoods, priced under $800, can be found in the southwest portion of our map above. These include East Garfield Park, North Lawndale, and South Lawndale.
