San Diego is known for its mild temperatures, palm trees and beaches, but it also has a pretty happening nightlife. Locals have their favorite spots, including breweries, dive bars, and rooftop lounges. But there are 5 places that really top the charts for us, so check out these bars you didn’t know you needed in your life–you’ll thank us later.

Don’t think too hard about this one, Trailer Park After Dark is exactly what you’re imagining, but better. This awesome, underground bar is truly one-of-a-kind. Head downstairs from 5th Avenue and you’ll see trailers with fenced-in lawn chair areas that can be reserved for your large group. In the main bar area, tables made out of wood pallets, mismatched floral chairs covered in spill-proof plastic, and shopping cart barstools welcome you to grab a seat. Trailer Park After Dark serves up all the classics: Old English 40s, Mickeys, and PBRs. They also make cocktails and have beer on tap, but people get pretty into the theme and many can be seen carrying around tall cans in brown bags. Don’t forget to admire the retro decor–this place has everything from rooster wallpaper to an ET + Michael Jackson picture, a taxidermied deer to Nintendo-dedicated trailer. This is a must-visit bar!

Prohibition

Address: 548 5th Ave.

Cost: $$

Pro Tip: A dress code may be enforced, but business casual should suffice

Drinks at speakeasy

If you don’t know what’s behind the door in the Gaslamp Quarter that reads “Law Offices of Eddie O’Hare, ESQ.”, it’s time you found out. The cryptic entrance to Prohibition gives way to an inviting lounge serving up handcrafted cocktails and local artists playing live music. Customers are taken back to a time when imbibing was not only done in secrecy, it was illegal altogether. Cleverly-named drinks, like “Taco Diet” remind customers that they’re still in the 21st Century and don’t have to hide out from the law, but can enjoy the thrill anyway. In true speakeasy fashion, Prohibition is only open Tuesday-Sunday from 8pm-1:30am, with live music beginning at 9pm.

Cat Eye Club

Address: 370 7th Ave.

Cost: $$

Pro Tip: Get eats here or next door at The Blind Burro

Retro and tiki-themed, Cat Eye Club brings the tropics to you. Their island-inspired drinks leave nothing to be desired and many come in kitschy mugs, ranging from tiki totem-poles to skulls. Try the Tourmaline Typhoon-a combination of two different types of rum, guava puree, and lemon juice accented with a dolphin-shaped banana topper. For groups of 2-3, get the Scorpion Bowl, and, for even larger groups, order the Goonies Never Say Die, which serves 4-6 people. Feeling lucky? Try the Pau Hana (serves 2-3) and let the bartender choose your fate. Whichever drink you get, you’ll feel like you’re on a tropical vacation after just a few sips.

The Aero Club

Address: 3365 India Street

Cost: $

Pro Tip: House-made sweet and sour mix used in their whiskey sours

If you’re a whiskey fan, this is seriously your spot. The Aero Club may not be in the most central location for a San Diego night on the town, but you can take the Sycamore Green Line there to start your night off right. Their massive whiskey collection is apparent right when you walk in; their liquor shelf is stacked to the ceiling with rare whiskeys, name-brand ones, and the cheap ones, too. Check out their selection in the bound menu book that features 400 different whiskeys and ask the bartender for suggestions if you’re at a complete loss. This place has some excellent customer service, reasonable prices, and puts a nice spin on the traditional dive bar vibe.

Starlite

Address: 3175 India Street

Cost: $$

Pro Tip: Head here on a first date, the atmosphere is rather cozy

The ambiance alone is reason enough to go to Starlite, but their specialty cocktails and tasty grub make this place that much better. The intimate-but-not-too-intimate atmosphere makes it the perfect place for any night out, and the outdoor patio option is great for daytime drinks.  Their kitchen cooks up signature dishes like The Burger, served on a brioche bun made by a local bakery, all night, landing it a spot on Starlite’s late night menu. For drinks, go with Le Botanique, a refreshing blend of tequila, aperol, grapefruit, lemon, and simple syrup. Or, keep it traditional and try their Moscow Mule, which comes in the copper mug and all and is rumored to be one of the best in all of San Diego.
