More than 150 years ago, Pierson B. Reading received a land grant called the Rancho Buena Ventura from then-governor Manuel Micheltorena. This land grant included many acres of land in Northern-Central California that later became the towns of Redding, Anderson, and Cottonwood. In its early days, Redding had 600 residents and was supported by the extraction of copper and iron from local mines. Before settlers established the town, Native Americans belonging to the Wintu tribe lived in the area, and during the California Gold Rush, prospectors discovered gold nearby.
The city is surrounded by mountains and farmland. It's in a rural part of the state with fewer than 100,000 residents. The climate includes wet, mild winters and hot summers, with temperatures frequently reaching the triple digits in July. Redding's top employers are Mercy Medical Center, the City of Redding, Shasta County, and the state transportation department.
One of the most well-known architectural installations in Redding is the Sundial Bridge, which was designed by the world-renowned architectural designer, Santiago Calatrava. Locals also have access to various outdoor recreation, including skiing in the winter and hiking in the summer. The sculpture park at city hall is a must-see for visitors. Four higher education institutions sit within the city limits: Shasta College, Simpson University, Shasta Bible College and Graduate School, and National University.
Shopping centers in the city include Mt. Shasta Mall and Hilltop Center. Some of its most walkable areas include downtown and the Magnolia and Lakeview neighborhoods.
The city has a laid-back feel with plenty to do and see no matter what time of year you visit or explore.
