Located along the central California coastline, Pismo Beach is a beautiful city in the southern part of San Luis Obispo County. It's part of the Five Cities Area, which includes Arroyo Grande, Grover Beach, Shell Beach, and Oceano. Explorers came through what is now known as Price Canyon to reach Pismo Beach, where they camped in the late 18th century. The name comes from a word in the Chumash language that means “tar,” which came from the tar springs and was used to caulk seafaring canoes.
With its laid-back, beachy vibe, Pismo Beach is a popular place to visit, and it's been referenced frequently in pop culture. Characters reference it in Clueless, The Big Lebowski, A Night at the Roxbury, and in shows like Futurama and I Love Lucy.
The city is known for the Pismo clam, a species of edible saltwater mollusk native to the region. Clamming is legal in the area, although the presence of sea otters and over-harvesting of clams by humans has diminished the numbers of this particular mollusk. The southern end of Price Street features a massive concrete statue of a clam, and an 8-inch Pismo clamshell is on display at the local Chamber of Commerce.
Pismo Beach hosts a clam festival each October, even though the clam population has declined. The festival includes a clam-themed parade and competitions to judge the best clam chowder in the region. With a population just over 8,000, this small city relies heavily on tourism to support its economy.
Offering stunning beach views and a charming atmosphere, Pismo Beach is a one-of-a-kind place on the central coast of California.
