Unique opportunity to live in the famous Eichler X-100 of the San Mateo Highlands now on the National Register of Historic Places! The Eichler X-100 house of steel, built by Eichler Homes in 1956 to a design by architects Jones and Emmons, was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 2016. It is the only individual Eichler home to be given such an honor. Builder Joe Eichler originally commissioned the X-100 for two main reasons: as a demonstration house for several cutting-edge technologies, such as steel framing; and to serve as the featured attraction for the grand-opening of the SM Highlands development. The X-100 made its debut on October 6, 1956, and remained open three months, attracting 150,000 visitors. The home remains a brave experiment to this day, not only for its steel structure but for other innovations including artificially lit skylights and a dining table with built-in cook top to keep food warm.
