Each year, The Trust For Public Land ranks the park systems of 100 major cities around the country. Aside from the total number and size of public parks available for residents to enjoy, they also take into consideration park amenities like playgrounds and restrooms, the percentage of the city’s population that is within a 10-minute walk to a park, as well as the city’s total funding allocated towards creating and maintaining these spaces to calculate what they call a ParkScore.
So, why is park access such a big deal? Cities by design offer fewer opportunities for people to get outside and enjoy the fresh air; it’s the symptom of living next door to great nightlife, tourism hot spots, and booming job markets. That, however, doesn’t make public green space any less important, as it contributes to the overall well being of residents and the communities they are a part of.
According to The Trust For Public Land, these are the top 10 cities that allow you to enjoy all the perks of city life while giving you above average access to parks and green spaces.
