Summer is in full swing, and if you’re like us, your calendar is filling fast with vacation plans and weekend getaways. With summer being a peak time to travel, it’s important to take a few safety measures before you hit the road to ensure your home is safe and sound while you’re away.
Hire a house sitter
If you plan to be away for an extended period of time, it’s a good idea to ask someone you trust to house sit for you. This may mean having them stay at your place the entire time, or just stopping by periodically to make sure everything’s okay, grab the mail and maybe water your plants.
Hold mail

To avoid having mail pile up or overflow from your mailbox, request to put a temporary hold on it for the duration of your time away. You can schedule a hold as much as 30 days in advance, up to the day before you’re planning to leave. Be mindful of packages that could be delivered while you’re away, such as meal kits or other recurring subscriptions, and reschedule their arrival accordingly.
Unplug
Prevent avoidable electrical issues while you’re gone, unplug everything you can, like your TV, lamps, wallflowers, chargers and small appliances. Before you leave, make sure everything is turned off.
Lock up

Make sure all doors and windows are securely locked, including your garage door. In addition to locking windows, we recommend closing your blinds, too.
Set your alarm

If you have a home security system, set your alarm. It also doesn’t hurt to make your security provider aware that you’ll be away.
Put lights on a timer
To give the illusion you’re home, put your internal lights on a timer. If applicable, you can also install motion-sensor lights for your external fixtures like your porch light or garage spotlight.
With a few simple precautions, you can have peace of mind while you’re away.
