Did you just buy a home? Are you renting a new apartment? Then there are lots of things you need to think about! And if you’re a dog-owner, one of the most important things to consider is how your dog will thrive in your new home. To keep both your dog and your house and in tact, here are some tips on how to dog-proof your new home:
Kitchen
The kitchen can be a yummy-but-dangerous place for pups. Follow these tips to keep the kitchen safe for everyone.
- Keep cleaning materials high – Instead of keeping your cleaning items or other toxic items under the sink, store them on a higher shelf so that it’s out of reach from your pup.
- Secure trash and food – Keep all food secured in cabinets and sealed. When it comes to trash, consider getting a sealed, stainless steel trash can so that your pup can’t tip it over. Or, get a trash can that can be concealed under the sink.
Living Room
If you’re having a movie night in your new home, pay attention to some of the things in your living room that might harm your pup.
- Tuck electric cords away – Be sure to keep any loose cords tucked away so that your dog won’t be tempted to chew on them or trip over them.
- Secure breakable items – You might love your vases and knick-knacks, but it can be easy for an excited pup to knock them over with their paws or tail. Be sure that they’re on high shelves or somehow secured in place.
Bathroom
While your dog might not spend a lot of time in the bathroom, you’ll still want to make sure it’s safe for them just in case they find their way in.
- Keep medicine high off the ground – If you keep your medicine or prescriptions in a common place – the medicine cabinet – make sure that it’s high off the ground. If you have under-the-sink storage, save that for dog-safe items that can’t harm them if found.
- Keep toilet lid closed – It might be a stereotype, but it’s typically true – dogs love drinking out of the toilet. And if your pup does, make sure that your toilet lid is always closed to prevent them from drinking toilet water or other chemicals that might be in it.
Bedroom
Since your bedroom is your sanctuary, you’ll want to make sure that it’s pet-safe so that your furry friend can relax with you!
- Secure dressers and armoires – Sometimes, dogs can be just like kids! Just as you would secure large objects so they don’t fall on children, you’d want to do the same thing for your pup.
- Tuck away shoes and clothes – Put away your shoes and clothes so that your dog doesn’t chew on them. This isn’t just to save your shoes from being destroyed, but also to protect your dog, since swallowing fabric or strings can be harmful.
Backyard
For a lot of dog owners, a big backyard is a must-have on the list. But you also want to make sure that your new backyard is safe for your pup. Here are some areas that need attention:
- The fence – If there is already a fence, make sure that it doesn’t have any holes or weak spots. If there’s no fence, consider adding one so that you can let your dog run around safely.
- The garden – Part of making your new house feel like a home might be planting a garden, or maintaining an existing garden. But you’ll want to ensure that all plants, flowers, or food growing in the garden is pet-safe.
Having a new home is exciting, so be sure to follow these tips in order to make your new home perfect for the whole (furry) family!
