Things You Should Throw Away During a Move

Moving presents the perfect opportunity to take stock of what you own, purge what you don’t need, and replace anything you’ve maybe held on to for too long. Whether it’s mystery cords, mismatched glassware, or outdated appliances, here’s how to know what to keep and what to toss.

Furniture

Couch

If you’re planning to bring your furniture, take down the dimensions to ensure it will fit in your new place. If you’re downsizing, you’ll need to part ways with a few things or opt for smaller versions. Anything that is starting to show significant wear or simply is no longer your taste, replace it with something that will fit your new space and style. Before you leave your couch or coffee table out on the curb though, try selling it.

Linens

If your bedding has become torn, worn, pilly or faded from too many uses and washes, now is a good time to donate or recycle these. Have a pile of blankets and towels that only see the light of day if you have visitors? Keep only a few and get rid of the rest. As a good rule of thumb, if something has a hole or stain, replace it too.

Kitchenware

Utensils

Have a blender you used for a month straight to make protein shakes that has gone untouched since? If you have appliances sitting idle, make sure they still work and then consider how often you use them. Perhaps you don’t need to haul these to your new home but instead, make room for something you’ll actually use in your everyday life. Dispose of dull knives, Tupperware with missing lids and any duplicative items.

Hand-Me-Downs

Dishes

Hand-me-down dishes and towels are great when you’re living in a college dorm or even as a recent grad. However, if you find that years later all of your hand-me-downs have followed you from apartment to apartment, start to pare back to only the things that you like, are cohesive, and still serve a purpose. Toss the varying sizes and shapes of drinking glasses and the dish towels your great aunt gave you seven years ago.

Freebies

Whether it’s the plastic cup you got from a sporting event or a shirt you received at your last job, free knick-knacks can quickly add up. Ditch the pens, frisbees, clothing, sunglasses, and mugs with company logos and brand names, we promise you won’t miss them.

Having trouble getting rid of your things? If it’s broken, outdated, unused, or doesn’t bring you joy, say goodbye and use this as an opportunity to replace it with something you love having in your home.
