As far as we’re concerned, Philadelphia is a top contender in the “cities that deserve a little more credit” category. It’s not every day you come across a major city with ample job opportunities, a burgeoning food scene, and sports and cultural events that’ll make you wish your weekend was just a bit longer. Ready to be convinced you should move to Philadelphia? Let’s dive in.

The Food

Eating in Philly is like being a kid in a candy shop. Philly cheesesteaks rule supreme here, obviously, but the city is also boasts incredible Mediterranean food, Philly-style bagels, and James Beard-awarded spots. It’s also home to Chef Christina Martinez (who’s now even more of a local celebrity thanks to an episode of Chef’s Table) and her South Philly Barbacoa. From cheap eats to date night spots, there’s a restaurant in Philadelphia for every occasion.

The Sports

Sports fans will find a welcoming home in Philadelphia. With a team in all four major league sports, Philly sports nuts can watch their local teams play year-round. What’s even better is that all four teams play in arenas and stadiums on the same block. Hop on the BSL local metro and it’ll drop you off in the Sports Complex in South Philadelphia, where you’ll find the stadiums for the Philadelphia 76ers, Eagles, Flyers and Phillies. Head to a game and go early; the bars and restaurants near the Xfinity Live venue entice sports fans with beer on tap, burgers, cheesesteaks, and mechanical bulls (for when the game’s over but you want to keep the party going).

The Culture & Activities

Although the city is loud and proud when it comes to their sports teams, there’s no shortage of things to do in Philly that don’t involve sports — just look at our post about the city’s plethora of cultural activities. From Italian street markets to the African American Museum in Philadelphia, your weekends can be filled with all sorts of fun cultural events. Plus, did you know that Philly has the nation’s largest public art program? It’s true. Mural Arts Philadelphia sees more than 150,000 visitors at its outdoor murals, so check them out for yourself.

If you’re in need of a little outdoor time, grab your bike and head for the Schuylkill Banks Boardwalk. You’ll get a beautiful for a ride with a view of downtown and the river, and you can pop into Rittenhouse Square for a bite to eat when you’re hungry. Trust us when we say, there’s plenty to do in this city that doesn’t involve a ball or a field.

The History

If you’re a history buff, you’ve come to the right place. Philadelphia is chock full of historical streets, neighborhoods, and attractions. The Liberty Bell on Independence Mall draws the most tourists, but locals get to enjoy Germantown, one of Philadelphia’s oldest settlements. Here, you can visit George Washington’s summer house, Lest We Forget Slavery Museum, and the Johnson House, one of the few remaining Underground Railroad Stations open to the public.

The Affordability

Compared to places like New York, DC, and even Chicago, Philadelphia is more affordable in terms of cost of living. The median rent for a one-bedroom apartment is just $1,380, nearly $1,000 cheaper than what you’d be spending in the top 5 most expensive cities to rent. That means you can find a place in Philly’s most popular neighborhoods and it won’t cost you a fortune.

The Job Opportunities

In 2019, a whopping 15 companies based in the Greater Philadelphia Area made the Fortune 500 List. Included in that list was Toll Brothers, Comcast, Aramark, and UGI – which was named the “biggest jump” on the List, having jumped 57 spots since last year. Point being, you won’t have trouble finding a good job at a great company in the area.
