Falling behind Oakland this month, Boston dropped a spot in national ranking to become the 5th most expensive rental market in the U.S. The price of one bedroom units fell 2.2% to a median of $2,230, while two bedroom units decreased 0.8% to $2,600.

At a median of $3,150 a month for one bedroom units, Downtown Boston was the most expensive neighborhood for renters this summer. D Street – West Broadway ($3,000), East Cambridge ($2,900), and South End ($2,725) were the next priciest areas. Mid-range priced rentals, ranging from $1,900 to $2,100, could be found in and around Washington Square, Wellington – Harrington, and Prospect Hill.
The most affordable areas, all priced below $1,800, included Mission Hill, Commonwealth, and Allston.
