Labor Day Weekend Guide: 12 Things to Do Before Summer’s Officially Over

While Memorial Day is the unofficial start to summer, Labor Day bookends our favorite season and gives us one last chance to soak up the final dog days of summer. Whether you’re having a staycation at home, spending the weekend in a city, or are heading to the great outdoors, here’s our guide to making the most out of your long weekend.

If you’re in the city

Dine outdoors – Make a reservation to dine at your favorite restaurant with outdoor seating and take full advantage of the warm evenings before they’re gone. And when you’re done with dinner, head to a nearby rooftop for golden hour drinks.

Drink rosé  – It wouldn’t be right to celebrate Labor Day weekend without the drink that’s become synonymous with summer. Break open a bottle of rose, and if you feel so compelled, make a batch of frosé

Have a picnic – Pack your lunch to go this weekend and enjoy it in the park where you can people (and dog) watch while enjoying the fresh air.

If you’re at home

Shop LDW sales – Take advantage of the killer deals circulating this weekend on everything from summer clothing to mattresses. If you’ve been holding out on making a big purchase, this weekend is the perfect time to pull the trigger.

Host a barbeque – Backyard cookouts with barbeque, ice-cold beer, and fireworks are fool-proof LDW plans. Pull out your bags sets (or corn hole), play a round of ladder ball, or have a friendly game of beer or water pong.

Attend an outdoor concert – Check to see if there are any upcoming concerts in your area at an outdoor venue or amphitheater. Some park districts host evenings with free live music in parks and other public spaces.

If you’re heading outdoors

Go camping – Grab your tent, the forest is calling. Sleeping under the stars, roasting smores, and sitting fireside is a great way to close out the summer.

Take a hike – If you love being outdoors but prefer sleeping in a bed, we don’t blame you. Find some great day-hiking trails to get you outside and moving around.

If you’re by the water

Go to the beach– Lather on the sunscreen and enjoy the sand and water while it’s still hot. Bring your favorite book, lots of water, and sunscreen.

Have a boat day – Spend an afternoon swimming and sunbathing on a boat with your friends.

Rent a canoe – If you live near a river or small lake, rent a canoe or tube for a few hours to float or paddle the day away.

Watch a sunset (or sunrise) – Summer sunsets are notoriously beautiful so be sure to catch a few more before the seasons change.

Summer is peak renting season. If you’re still in the market for a new place to live, be sure to browse apartments available for rent before they’re gone!
