Aside from the occasional city-shuttering ice storm, winter in Atlanta is not too shabby. With temperatures that make the neighbors to the north green with envy, Atlantans get to enjoy the outdoors all year long. By the outdoors, we mean places like Park Tavern’s terrace overlooking Piedmont Park, of course.
We’ve taken a deep dive into Atlanta’s winter calendar and found some can’t-miss events, ranging from taking selfies with your favorite Braves player to seeing a rock legend at the Tabernacle to taking in the fine arts at a mansion.
Callanwolde Arts Festival
Jan 20-21
The Callanwolde Fine Arts center should already be on your list of places to visit in Atlanta—it is, after all, one of the most impressive Gothic-Tudor mansions in the country—but if you’re into art, now you have an extra reason. The fourth annual Callanwolde Arts Festival brings together nearly 100 painters, photographers and more for two days of artistic bliss.
Atlanta Winter Beer Fest
Jan 27
It’s late January and you’ve got the winter blues, which means there’s only one thing to do: go to the Atlanta Winter Beer Fest. With over 150 beers from Georgia and unlimited samples for $45, you’ll forget all about the miserable cold.
Atlanta Braves Chop Fest
Jan 27-28
This is the weekend Braves fans wait for all off-season! Spend the weekend at the ballpark meeting your favorite players and coaches (selfies encouraged!), hitting the batting cages, and getting excited about the 2018 season.
Uncorked Atlanta Wine Festival
Feb 3
Once you’ve recovered from Winter Beer Fest, it’s time to head over to Park Tavern, overlooking Piedmont Park, and spend four hours of your life enjoying wine tastings and live music. But mostly wine. With over 50 varieties on site, you’re sure to find one or ten you like.
Jason Isbell
Feb 8 & 9
There aren’t a lot of musicians out there who can compete with Jason Isbell’s songwriting, nor his guitar playing, and obviously, Atlantans appreciate that—he’s doing a two-night stand at The Fox Theatre! If you’re into Chris Stapleton, Sturgill Simpson, or just good music in general, buy tickets. Right now.
Atlanta Chinese Lunar New Year Festival
Feb 17
If you’ve never been to a Chinese Lunar New Year celebration, you should thank your lucky stars that the Culture Center of Taipei is putting on an all-day event. Take in traditional live performances, including the famous lion and dragon dances, and try special Taiwanese New Year’s dishes.
OysterFest
Feb 17
There’s one huge perk to living relatively close to the Gulf and the east coast: an abundance of oysters. Park Tavern’s annual Oysterfest is one of the most fun events of the entire year, with live music (ranging from bluesy rock to pure funk), cold beer, and enough fried, steamed, and raw oysters to satisfy even the most impressive eaters.
Hops in the Hangar
Feb 24
This is the kind of fundraiser you don’t want to miss: support Atlanta’s Delta Flight Museum by drinking local beers. There will be over 40 local brews available, so make sure to have a hearty lunch beforehand.
Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds
Feb 28
Few musicians currently touring have more experience blowing minds than Noel Gallagher, former frontman of Oasis. Gallagher and his band, the High Flying Birds, are heading to Atlanta to promote their stunning new album, Who Built the Moon?, but rest assured that you’ll hear some classic Oasis hits, too.
