There are so many fun things to do in Atlanta, we couldn’t possibly fit them all on one page. From the museums and sports venues to renowned theaters and spacious parks, you’ll never run out of options in Atlanta. Parents in town for the weekend? We’ve got just the agenda for you. Save the bar-hopping for another time and try these 6 things to do when your parents are in town instead.

Hit the outdoors

Sometimes referred to as “the city in the woods,” Atlanta caters to outdoor lovers with its parks, recreation areas, and green spaces. The Atlanta BeltLine is a popular, paved walkway that winds through the city of Atlanta. Currently, the pathway weaves through some of Atlanta’s most popular neighborhoods, including Old Fourth Ward (and its park!), Grant Park, and Virginia Highland. Explore the parks, local restaurants, shops, and green spaces along the BeltLine on foot, skates, or bike. There are also plenty of e-scooters and rental bikes scattered alongside the trail that you can rent via the Scoot, Skip, and even Uber or Lyft apps.

While many portions of the Atlanta BeltLine are completed, it’s still an ongoing project. Upon its completion, the urban walkway will stretch over 22 miles and connect more than 45 neighborhoods.

Catch a show at The Fox Theatre

The Fox Theater was built in 1928 and originally acted as the headquarters for the Atlanta Shriners. Unable to bear the financial burden of the place, the auditorium was sold to William Fox, a movie mogul. Today, the 4,665 seat theatre hosts concerts, movies, Broadway performances, and more. Named the #1 non-residency venue worldwide by Billboard Magazine, experiencing a show at the fabulous Fox is definitely one of the most unique things to do in Atlanta.

Take a stroll around Centennial Olympic Park

Built during the 1996 Summer Olympic Games, Centennial Olympic Park is a 21-acre park in the heart of downtown Atlanta. Nearby, you’ll find some of Atlanta’s most beloved attractions, including the Georgia Aquarium, the World of Coca-Cola, and the College Football Hall of Fame. Just across the street from the park is the SkyView, a huge, luxury Ferris wheel with air-conditioned gondolas and spectacular views of the city and beyond. Take the parents up there on a hot, humid day for an air-conditioned view of the city.

Picnic at Piedmont Park

Atlanta weather is erratic, but if you happen to be looking for things to do in Atlanta on one of its “normal” days, a picnic at Piedmont Park might be just the thing. Locals love this 189-acre park situated in the heart of the city between Midtown and Virginia Highland. It’s easily accessible via the Beltline and there’s always some kind of event or festival going on. Even if there’s no event on the particular day you visit, the multi-purpose fields, communal gardens, dog parks, playgrounds, and fishing pond are sure to keep your parents (and you) entertained. Pack a picnic, grab a blanket, and find a shady spot to lounge.

 Visit HIstoric Oakland Cemetry

Built in 1850, the Oakland Cemetery is the final resting place of many of Atlanta’s most notable residents. Among the buried are Maynard Jackson, Margaret Mitchell, and Bishop Wesley John Gaines, among others. In addition to its famous residents, the peaceful cemetery grounds have magnificent gardens, special events throughout the year, and private tours for folks who are interested in its history. Catch their Malts and Vaults: Where Beer Meets History event in November where you’ll go on a 1-hour walking tour of Atlanta’s brewing history, complete with samples of some local brews.

See what’s in bloom at Atlanta Botanical Garden

Located right next to Piedmont Park and also accessible via the Beltine, Atlanta Botanical Garden is the perfect place to bring your parents. Though its only 30 acres, there’s so much to see here, including greenhouses, art sculptures, artist talks, classes, and a canopy bridge. After exploring, grab seats in the cafe and enjoy drinks and snacks. If your parents happen to visit during the holiday season, they’re in for a treat. Every year, the botanical garden transforms into a winter wonderland, with its “Garden Lights, Holiday Nights” exhibit running from November to January.

Whether you want to explore beautiful gardens, take in the city view, or spend time outdoors, you’re bound to find something that suits your fancy when your parents visit ATL. Don’t have a place in Atlanta yet? Explore thousands of apartments on Zumper and find your new home.
