
Every year around this time, cities across the U.S. catch the Irish bug. And what’s not to like? Celebrate this St. Patrick’s Day 2019 with green beers, corned beef and cabbage, live music, and Celtic dancing. Cities will be throwing huge block parties, Celtic-themed festivals, and hosting family-friendly parades to pay homage to the country and its people; but, every city does it a little differently. Here’s what the celebrations look like across 10 U.S. cities.
Boston

The main event in Boston’s Irish-American neighborhood of Southie is the traditional (and ever-popular) St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The event starts at Broadway Station and winds through the historically Irish neighborhood. Stop at pubs along the route for an Irish Car Bomb and you’ll be in good company. Check out L Street Tavern (made famous by the movie “Good Will Hunting”, the aptly named Shenanigans Bar & Grill, ou Murphy’s Law for an authentic, Irish experience.
San Francisco Bay Area

Starting in the East Bay, the Irish-inspired city named Dublin throws an annual St. Patty’s Day festival every year, and the tradition continues this St. Patrick’s Day 2019. Catch the parade, which starts at 9:30am at the Dublin Civic Center, then enjoy three stages of live music, more than 250 booths selling Celtic goods, and food and drink stands to satisfy all your hunger and thirst cravings.
San Francisco has all your classic pub crawl options: from the Chestnut Street Marina bars to Polk Street watering holes, you’ll find lots of green-beer-inspired crawls throughout the city. For something a little different, check out the St. Patrick’s Comedy Weekend at the Palace of Fine Arts. Laugh the night away at this pop up show featuring local SF comedians and regulars from Cobb’s Comedy Club, SF Sketchfest, and Punchline. Check out the Irish Bank’s Annual St. Patrick’s Day Block Party, it’s a great place to go after the 2019 SF St. Patrick’s Day Parade, which draws thousands to the city with its mission of “Making San Francisco Irish for the Day.”
Chicago
Perhaps known as the city who does this holiday best, Chicago is a great place to be on St. Patrick’s Day 2019. Last year’s events were crowd pleasers and this year’s should be no different. Check out the dyeing of the Chicago River, play three hours of free ping pong and enjoy unlimited drinks and apps at SPiN Chicago, or plan your own bar crawl through the always-lively Boystown. Los Angeles

Whether you like it or not, LA is car-centric, this much you know. Make sure to get your designated driver, call a car, or take the metro so you can bop around the city drinking as much green beer and Irish whiskey as you want (responsibly, of course). Head to Casey’s downtown where they host their annual St. Patty’s Day Street Festival; the street-blocking festival is usually a real good time. Rock & Reilly’s throws a block party in West Hollywood, complete with kegs of green beer, spinning DJs, food for sale, and a photo booth.
Hit the pavement and burn some calories off before you throw a few pints back; the Redondo Beach St. Patrick’s Day 5K offers the perfect dose of exercise to get your day started on the right foot. Go all out at see Flogging Molly perform at the Hollywood Palladium; they’re sure to show you one hell of an Irish good time.
Philadelphia

Like many bars across Philly, Fado Irish Pub is throwing a party and you’re invited. Enjoy two live music performances and pints of beer while mingling with plenty of other shamrock-wearing bar hoppers. Tavern on Broad is where to go to pick up your “Kiss me I’m Irish” pub crawl wristbands; after you have your wristband, you’ll get cover-free admission to participating bars and drink specials all night. Looking for something even bigger? Grab your tickets to St. Paddy’s Day at Springfest Live! at Xfinity Live. Tickets will cost you $45+, but will give you access to more than 150 different beers from 75+ breweries. And yes, there will be green beer.
Denver

Kick off your weekend celebration bright and early on Saturday at 9:30am when Denver’s St Patrick’s Day Parade begins. Follow the route or post up with chairs, blankets, and some food and drink to keep you satiated. Spend all weekend at Irishfest, held in Denver’s Ballpark District. This year’s festival features a silent disco in the streets, live music throughout the day and into the night, and food and drink specials at participating bars. Best of all, it’s free to attend. Just bring plenty of money for all the food and drink you’ll want while you’re there celebrating the Irish. Improper City is also throwing a St. Patty’s Day bash on their patio; they’ll have DJs throughout the weekend, themed drink specials, and free rides courtesy of Root Insurance. There are plenty of other options, too, like Fado Irish Pub Block Party, The Cherry Cricket St. Patrick’s Day Weekend celebration, and a U2 cover band kicking off a St. Patty’s Day concert at the Irish Snug.
Houston

Join the masses and head to Lucky’s Pub in Downtown Houston for their 12th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Festival, the largest of its kind in Houston. Enjoy food from the city’s best food trucks, free admission before noon, and more than 15 bands and DJs performing live on two stages. Have kids? Still want to party? Check out McGonigel’s Mucky Duck where you can enjoy all the Irish fare and drink you want while your kids hang out at a tea party, which is complete with games, activities, and entrance into Faerie Land. Grab your tickets early and get excited for live music, traditional Irish dance, and delicious food.
Dallas

The biggest celebration happens on Saturday at 11am–the 40th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Festival. This family-friendly event is the largest of its kind in the Southwest, making it the premier spot to celebrate the holiday weekend in Dallas. The two-mile route features more than 90 floats, 1,700 participants, and winds through downtown Dallas. Catch the beginning of the action at Greenville at Blackwell Street and head to Sandaga 813 for their block party immediately following the parade or Saturday Shenanigans at Twin Peaks Dallas’ Mockingbird location (conveniently along the parade route).
Miami

Miami never needs a reason to party, but St. Patrick’s Day sure does bring out a fun side of the city. Miami goes all out for the Irish, with block parties and bar crawls in nearly every neighborhood. Wynwood alone has a free block party presented by Jameson, complete with green beer, food trucks, live music, and an artisan market. Duffy’s Sports Bar & Grill hosts a bash, CityPlace Doral throws a block party, and The Wharf hosts a two-day riverside festival. Need more options? NYC

You know the city with the largest Irish population does it big for St. Patrick’s Day. In fact, New York is home to the largest and oldest parade in the world! Catch New York’s St. Patrick’s Day 2019 Parade as it marches up 5th Avenue and throughout Manhattan.
Grab some friends and head out for some day drinking via the Shamrock Stroll Pub Crawl; $25 will get you access to three days of bar crawling at participating locations. The Kiss Me I’m Irish St. Patrick’s Day Bar Crawl brings bar crawlers to the East Village for two days of drinks specials, green beer, and shenanigans.
While every city has its own way of celebrating the Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, you can always opt to stay in and enjoy Irish-themed drinks and food from the comfort of your own apartment.
