You’re in Texas, you might as well indulge in the Tex-Mex. If you haven’t heard of Torchy’s Tacos within your first few days of moving to Dallas, you’re hanging out with the wrong people. With more than 50 locations across Texas and even some sprinkled throughout Colorado, Oklahoma, and Arkansas,Austin-born Torchy’s is becoming a behemoth of a taco chain. Come to this wife-and-husband-owned-spot and you’re going to get much more than BBQ, although you’ll get that, too. Along with their award-winning, mouthwatering grub, they also boast an outdoor patio which they often use to host live music. They’re also located in Deep Ellum, so your options before and after you eat are limitless.

This Bishop Arts District staple is known for its mouthwatering, handmade, preservative-free pies and, while they have other locations spread throughout Dallas, the Bishop Arts location is where it all started. Stop in at the iconic house and order a slice of the Cloud Nine, a three-layer custard pie with salted caramel, butterscotch custard, and brown sugar meringue in a flaky crust, and get it a la mode with house made ice cream.

Best Italian Restaurant

Fachini

Chef Julian Barsotti already made a name for himself in the Dallas restaurant business with Nonna, Carbone’s and Sprezza, but Fachini opened in 2018 and it’s given traditional Italian food a makeover. Along with the upscale dining experience (expect Caesar salads made tableside by waiters in full tuxedos), you’ll choose from classic dishes like Pappardelle Bolognese and Rigatoni alla Vodka made with flavors from Naples, New Orleans, and beyond.

Best Sushi

Uchi

Sushi in Dallas? Yes, you read that right. Uchi Sushi isn’t just sushi, though, it’s a Japanese dining experience. Every day, they fly in fresh seafood from the Toyosu Market in Japan and, along with seasonal ingredients, create inventive sushi dishes like the hama chili — yellowtail, ponzu, thai chili and orange supreme.

You’ll have to throw your name in the lottery for a chance to eat at this spot, but when you’re finally chosen, the wait will have been worth it. frank. is a private, invitation-only dinner party created and cooked by three chefs who met in 2011 on the set of the TV show, Masterchef. Not enough can be said about the food and the experience at this place, so get on their list, and cross your fingers.

Best Brunch

Bread Winners Cafe and Bakery

The Uptown location offers, by far, the best brunch atmosphere in Dallas. With seating indoors and outside on the front patio, atrium, and upstairs balcony, you’re bound to get a good table for brunch. The menu features plenty of food like chicken and waffles to cure that hangover, and frozen peach bellinis if you need a little hair of the dog.

Best Date Night Spot

Located inside the Boyd Hotel in Deep Ellum, this sleek, dimly-lit restaurant fits “date night spot” to a T. Its mid-century modern flair makes it stand out among the Deep Ellum murals and dive bars, and its incredible menu of wines, housemade cocktails, appetizers and big plates will not disappoint.

Best Place for a Burger

Big Mouth Burger Company

This unassuming burger joint in Oak Cliff lives up to its name, with burgers so big you can barely finish them in one sitting. Their menu boasts more than 10 different types of burgers, including a Patty Melt Burger (burger wrapped in a grilled cheese sandwich) and a Chili Burger, plus onion rings, salads, and sandwiches. They also make a killer carrot cake, so if you have room for dessert, give it a try.
