The essential bars in Houston – Eight Row Flint, Anvil Bar & Refuge, and Julep – are always going to be crowd-pleasers. But, that also means they’re always going to be packed. When you want to have a bit more of an adventurous night, these bars are more off-the-beaten-path than your average watering hole. Here’s our list of the six most unique bars in Houston.

Base

Base is a secret bar with a modern twist. To get in, head to the Henry Henke Building in Downtown Houston. Once inside, hop on the elevator to the basement. Wander around until you find a neon sign that reads “Shhh…”, push the wall below the sign, and voila, you’re inside. This swanky spot features a light-studded dance floor, DJs, bottle service, and amazing cocktails. Go inside, make some new friends, and enjoy a few drinks. But shhh, don’t tell anyone.

Houston Watch Company

The entrance of the Houston Watch Company is narrow and easy to miss, partially because most people think they should be looking for a watch store. In reality, the bar gets its name from the 1912 Houston Watch Company that once occupied the piece of real estate where the bar currently stands. Houston Watch Company is tucked inside the 1910 Southern Pacific Railroad Building and just a short distance from Market Square. To enjoy a bit of Houston history and for an array of Irish, Japanese, Scottish, and American whiskeys, this unique bar in Houston is a must-visit.

Marfreless

Keep your eyes peeled for the iconic blue door if you’re searching for Marfreless Bar. Though the bar has changed locations, undergone a renovation, and been through several owners, it’s still a gem in Houston’s nightlife. Its current location is in the back of the shopping center that houses the River Oaks Theatre. This Houston speakeasy has been around since 1972 and is a popular date night spot.

Mongoose Versus Cobra

A beer drinker’s delight, Mongoose Versus Cobra is one of Houston’s best and most beautiful beer bars. It’s also hard to find; there’s no sign and half of the building is blanketed with an ivy veil. But here’s a hint: it’s across from Leon’s Lounge on McGowen. Combining industrial design with homey vibes, the building – originally a grocery store – was built in 1915. Today, the Midtown neighborhood bar features over 40 craft beers and countless crafty cocktails. A nod to the bar’s past, there’s a “groceries” section on the menu that features sandwiches, snacks, charcuterie boards, and a surprisingly delicious house pretzel (only $6 during Happy Hour).

Prohibition Supperclub and Bar

Step inside Prohibition and you’ll enter into a true speakeasy experience and then some. The building, constructed in 1912, was the site of Houston’s first silent theatre. Today, Prohibition Supper Club and Bar houses a large stage, art deco accents, a serpentine staircase, and a burlesque troupe known as The Moonlight Doll. There are additional nightly shows (plus a weekend brunch show), but be sure to grab a drink at The Oyster Bar next door first. This entertainment venue is one of the best in town, which is saying a lot because Houston has a lot of options

Notsuoh

Notsuoh was originally a clothing store during the early 1900s. Today, it’s perhaps the only bar-clothing store blend in the world. The spot is located along the MetroRail and is marked by a neon “Clarks” sign that hangs outside. Inside, treat yourself to a gin and tonic, browse through vintage finds, and indulge in an ever-changing lineup of live music and performing arts.

From amazing cocktails to unique themes, you’ll never view a bar the same again after checking out some of these unique spots. Ready to make your move? Check out thousands of apartments for rent on Zumper and get ready to experience some of Houston’s best bars.
