Get the most out of your outdoor spaces by creating an inspiring landscape – a sanctuary in the sun where you can get together with friends, chat with neighbors, or escape for a little “me time.” But to bring it all together, you’ll need to consider the form and function of your little paradise. Here are a few tricks to harness that outdoor energy:
Make an Entrance
The entrance to your garden or lawn is the best place to start. Make a statement with a sky-blue iron gate or other eccentric entrance piece. Don’t be afraid to express yourself – this is the way in to your own little world of green.
Create Walking Paths
If you have the room, walking paths can be made with rock, dirt, mulch, leaves – basically anything you can find in mass and on the cheap. They add intricacy to the landscape with gentle curving lines, and have the functional purpose of protecting the surrounding plants and grasses from tread ware.
Have a Seat
Whether you simply move out an old rocking chair or assemble an entire outdoor living room, adding seating to your outdoors creates an irresistible setting for relaxation (or the perfect setting to share a glass of rosé with friends). When harvest time comes, the extra chairs will make a handy shelf for fresh blooms, herbs and veggies.
Think Vertically
Expand your outdoor experience by decorating not just the ground, but the fences, walls, and trees as well. Hang planters on the garden fence for aromatic blooms, string lights between the tree branches for evening atmosphere, or put up a few decorative bird feeders (check out decorative DIY ideas here). The vertical decor will add a whole new dimension to your outdoor landscape.

Use the Sun
Incorporate the sun into your plan. Which areas have the most shade during sunrise and sunset? Which areas provide relief from harsh mid-day rays? Plan your planting, seating, and walking paths accordingly. You can even use a carefully placed piece of artwork to create your own decorative sundial.

When the day is done, have a seat and relax in your newfound outdoor wonderland. In this gorgeous summer weather, you may never want to go inside again.
