4 Most Common Window Problems

Editor’s Note: This is a guest post, contributed by Jay Lillien, the owner of 303Windows.

What most of us might be surprised to learn is that home window troubles are much more common than we think. Often, we rarely notice any issues until windows are exposed to extreme weather conditions, in summer or in winter, that make these flaws obvious. Here are four of the most common window problems that may be making your home less comfortable than it should be.

1. Drafty Windows

One of the most common complaints renters have is drafty windows. Not only do drafty windows make your home less comfortable, they can also significantly increase your heating and cooling costs. Some of the most common causes for drafty windows include broken window seals, poor insulation, improperly installed windows, or cracking and rotting window frames.

Solution: While a drafty window can sometimes be repaired by replacing the window weather stripping or applying window caulk around the frame, typically a drafty window is a clear sign that it is time to replace your windows.

2. Condensation

Has your window ever inexplicable become cloudy or foggy? That’s condensation, and it indicates that the seals between your window glass panes has failed. In extremely cold weather, ice might even form in between the glass panes, making your heating system work even harder to heat your house and driving up your electricity bill.

Solution: Although there is any number of do-it-yourself guides available that offer quick solutions for window condensation issues, most do not address the loss of the window’s insulative properties. Aside from having the window completely removed and resealed at the window factor, the best remedy is to replace the window with one that provides a warranty on the window seals.

3. Cracking, Warping or Rotting Wood

Extreme temperature fluctuations can cause windows that are not installed properly, or those with wooden frames that are not maintained well, to crack, warp, or rot at the window frame. This creates a draft around the window and allows moisture to penetrate the spaces around the window. As a result, this trapped moisture can cause the framing to rot and can even lead to deadly mold to grow around your window and behind your walls.

Solution: Quality vinyl replacement window can withstand these temperature fluctuations, require significantly less maintenance than wood frame windows, and won’t rot like wood frames.

4. Faulty Windows

Nothing is more aggravating (or dangerous!) than a window that sticks, is difficult to open or close, or needs to be propped up to stay open.In the winter, the weather in the Denver area can change from extreme cold to warm in a matter of days. Many like to open their windows on these warmer days to let in some fresh air, and windows that are faulty make something as simple as letting in a little fresh air a chore.

Solution: Replacing faulty windows with energy efficient and secure replacement windows will not only help lower your energy bill and keep your home safe, they can make those warmer Colorado winter days far more enjoyable.
