2018 Memorial Day Activities in the Top 7 U.S. Cities

This coming weekend, cities across the country will celebrate the unofficial start to summer. It’s the perfect time to get outdoors and enjoy the sunshine, no matter where you call home. Check out these Memorial Day activities in some of the top cities across the country; you might not live there, but you can always do a weekend getaway!

Denver

What could be better than an outdoor music festival on the streets of downtown Denver for a good cause? The Denver Day of Rock unites the community with a free concert that benefits Amp the Cause, a Denver-based non-profit that supports other community organizations. On Saturday, May 26th the annual event will kick off on the city’s 16th Street Mall, boasting five stages of live music, drinks and food for purchase, and hours of entertainment.

Check out the Denver Arts Festival which takes place on the on both Saturday and Sunday, another free event where more than 50,000 people are expected to attend. Local bands, musicians, and artists will perform for the crowd, and a beer, wine, and sangria garden will keep the party going. Enjoy both of these free events this Memorial Day Weekend and keep your wallet happy.

Seattle

Seattle has a lot going on this weekend, so it’s time to figure out your Memorial Day plans. The 47th Annual Northwest Folklife Festival hits the Seattle Center on Friday and runs through Monday. This free event is one of the largest multicultural festivals in the nation, with over 5,000 performers, 250,000 expected attendees, and plenty of stories, art, film, music, song, and dance to entertain everyone. Enjoy the second weekend of the Seattle International Film Festival and catch a showing of one of more than 400 films. This is the largest and most highly-attended film festivals in the country, so don’t miss out!

Ready to party? Grab tickets for the All American Bash Party Boat. You’ll get to board a 212-seater boat at 9:30pm and dance the night away on two dance floors. The party lasts three hours, features a full bar, and offers a picturesque view of the Seattle skyline from the harbor.

Chicago

In Chicago, Memorial Day Weekend not only marks the unofficial start of summer, it kicks off the city’s famous festival season. Get the party started at the Chicago House Music Festival at Millennium Park, a free series of concerts on Saturday. There’s also the Belmont-Sheffield Music Fest, as well as the Randolph Street Market, which both take place on Saturday and Sunday.

Starting Memorial Day Weekend, the Navy Pier’s Miller Lite Beer Garden opens up for the summer and Aon Summer Fireworks light up the sky at night. While you’re in the area, head to the Memorial Day Parade at noon on Saturday.

Minneapolis

The winter has come and gone, and the warm weather is calling; it’s the perfect weekend to head outside in Minneapolis. Start your weekend at Soundset 2018–one of the largest hip hop festivals in the country–which takes place at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds. See artists like Logic, Tyler the Creator, Russ, and the Wu-Tang Clan take the stage. Drink and eat at one of the city’s best outdoor spots; whether it’s a rooftop where you can sip on a drink and play a giant beer pong game, or a quirky bar with a ferris wheel where you can grab a cocktail while taking in a view of the city, Minneapolis has some of the best outdoor food and drink options out there.

Philadelphia

Start off with a family-friendly activity and go to Sail Philadelphia, a festival celebrating historic wooden ships that dock along Penn’s Landing. More than 170,000 people are expected to explore the 11 wooden boats throughout the five-day festival, so get there early to grab a spot in line for a tour. Head to Parks on Tap, a pop-up beer garden that’s set to take over FDR Park from May 23-28.

Hometown legends Hall & Oates created their very own festival, calling it HoagieNation, and it’s coming to town on Saturday. See them perform, along with Fitz & the Tantrums, Train, and more during this food, music, and cultural event. Best of all? Your ticket comes with a free hoagie happy hour, so you’ll have enough fuel to dance the night away.

Boston

Boston Calling is one of the city’s most beloved music festivals, and it’s coming to town this weekend. Check out artists like Khalid, The National, Eminem, and Fleet Foxes at Harvard Athletic Complex. The festival starts Friday and runs through Sunday, so be sure to look at the daily lineup.

Cape Cod

 

Every Bostonian knows that one of the best places to be during Memorial Day Weekend is in the Cape. Whether you rent a house out with some friends, head to a family member’s beach cottage, or make a day trip of it, Cape Cod is the perfect spot to relax along the water during the three-day weekend.

Atlanta

This weekend, head straight to Piedmont Park and catch all the action at the Atlanta Jazz Festival. This annual event brings together up-and-coming and seasoned jazz musicians for one of the largest, free jazz festivals in the country. The city hosts musicians at different venues throughout the month of May, and holds the Jazz Festival as the culminating event.
