Monterey, a gorgeous city located on the central coastline of California, was founded more than two centuries ago. It existed before the formation of the United States, serving as the capital of Alta, California, under Mexico and Spain between 1804 and 1846. During this time, the city hosted the first public building, library, printing press, and theater in what is now known as the state of California.
Many famous artists and writers have called this city home over the years, as its surroundings attract those who want to represent its beauty in their artistic works. A few well-known residents include Bruce Ariss, Doris Day, Clint Eastwood, and John Steinbeck. One of its most popular attractions is the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which focuses its exhibits on the marine habitats in the nearby Monterey Bay. This location was the first to care for and display a great white shark.
Visitors and locals enjoy visiting the Monterey Museum of Art and Fisherman's Wharf. Both of these attractions draw crowds daily. Various arts and crafts festivals take place each year on the wharf. Another annual event is the Monterey Jazz Festival, which brings thousands of jazz musicians and fans to the city.
Although the city has been around for centuries, it has a population of just over 28,000 residents. Its economy relies heavily on tourism. Some of the top employers in Monterey include the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, Dole Fresh Vegetables, and the Defense Language Institute. Several sports teams play in the city, including the Monterey Amberjacks, a professional baseball team, and the Monterey Bay FC, a professional expansion soccer team.
Check out this unique city to experience a coastal, laid-back atmosphere.

However, some residents express concerns about the cost of living and limited rental availability, making it challenging for newcomers to find housing. Parking can also be a hassle in busy areas, which is something locals frequently mention. Overall, the scenic beauty and recreational offerings stand out in daily life here.

Zumper’s proprietary rental data fuels our analysis. Rent and market trends, availability, neighborhood popularity, and lifestyle scores are all calculated using real-time and 2024 rental inventory and prices.
Our Lifestyle Categories ("great for eco-living," "great for social life," "great for pet owners," etc.) are determined by set criteria, against which we score each listing and its available features. At the neighborhood level, we calculate the listing count for each category to determine which lifestyles best fit each area.
Zumper, founded in 2012, is North America’s largest privately-owned rental platform, offering over 1 million listings across the U.S. and Canada. Stay informed on the latest trends and shifts in the rental market with our monthly National Rent Report, your go-to resource for key insights into the evolving rental landscape.
