A Downtown Athens Landmark c.1897: Rich in tradition, Farmer’s Exchange is one of the most desired options for downtown student living. Conveniently located in vibrant downtown Athens, Farmer’s Exchange is just steps away from UGA Campus and all the Classic City has to offer. Historic Student Lofts: Farmer’s Exchange was constructed in 1897 by Billups Phinizy, a prominent local Athenian who took part in the construction of Clarke County’s courthouse as well as The Georgian Hotel. A grocer occupied the first floor and there were offices on the second. The rear section of the building was used as a cotton warehouse. Second story additions were added later, and Farmer’s Hardware moved into the building in 1972. In 1997, Farmer’s Hardware was beautifully renovated into loft apartments with a rustic feel of exposed beam and brick.
