Positioned near the convergence of the Gila and Colorado Rivers, Yuma is a historic city located in southwest Arizona that's known for its extensive sunshine and unique outdoor recreation. It's the principal city of the Yuma Metropolitan Statistical Area, which also includes other cities in Yuma County. Nearly 100,000 people reside in the city, which is known as the “Sunniest City on Earth” due to its warm climate throughout much of the year.
The sunny, hot weather in Yuma also makes it a prime location for growing many types of crops, so the city is one of the nation's agricultural hubs. Over 175 different crops grow here, including lettuce and other leafy vegetables. Multiple military bases are also located within the city, so a significant portion of its residents work on these bases. The Marine Corps Air Station Yuma is the city's largest employer, with over 5,500 employees. Other major employers in the city include the Yuma Union High School District and the U.S. Army Yuma Proving Ground.
The early residents of Yuma were members of two Native American tribes: Cocopah and Quechan. Some of their descendants still live in the area on the designated reservations. Along with the Native American cultural influences, the city of Yuma is also known for its outdoor recreation and military influences. The Marine Corps base hosts an annual air show and various military exercises. Other events include an annual rodeo, a county fair, and the home games of various local sports clubs.
For those who love sunshine, Yuma is a fun place to visit, live, and explore.
