Situated just southeast of California's Central Valley, Bishop is a small city with nearly 4,000 residents. The population has grown slightly over the last few decades, up from just over 3,500 in the 2000 census. The city was once known as Bishop Creek, which refers to the creek that flows from the Sierra Nevada mountain range. This creek was named after one of the area's earliest European settlers, while nearby Owens Lake was named for a member of an exploration party.
Despite its small size, Bishop serves as a residential and commercial center in Inyo County. It's the most populated city within the county limits and the only incorporated city. Many of the tourist attractions and vacation destinations within the Sierra Nevadas are within close proximity to Bishop, so visitors may pass through or stop by. The city also served as the filming location for several major western films that starred big-name actors like John Wayne, Joel McCrea, and Charlton Heston.
Several Native American tribes still live in and around Bishop. They mainly reside on four reservations, including the Bishop Indian Reservation and the Lone Pine Indian Reservation.
The city also celebrates the contributions of pack mules and their influence on the area at an annual festival known as Bishop Mule Days. This festival brings many tourists to the area each year, particularly from Southern California.
Some of the city's most notable residents include the late Horace M. Albright, one of the earliest directors of the National Park Service; Richard Eyer, a child actor; and Tracy Smith, an Olympian, and world record-holder. Bishop is a unique place to visit or call home, offering access to unique attractions and opportunities for outdoor exploration.
