Parts of Eastwood were subdivided as early as 1906. With a streetcar line running from 95th Street along 118th Avenue as early as 1910 (to link Edmonton to the village of North Edmonton), development of properties close to the line must have been attractive. The eastern portions of Eastwood were subdivided in 1910 and 1913. Around the time of World War I, a number of homes and businesses were built along the street car line and the major roads. With an end to Edmonton’s pre-war land boom, development of Eastwood proceeded more slowly, leaving many properties undeveloped for years. By the 1950s, most of the original development was complete. For the past several decades, redevelopment has occurred as older structures are replaced with new ones with different densities and uses. Some 63 percent of Eastwood’s dwelling units are now renter-occupied. Eastwood’s name was likely derived from a descriptive name, as it was once part of the Village of North Edmonton until amalgamation with the City of Edmonton in 1912.
