Convenient apartment living right on Market SquareThe Menaker offers 28 apartments designed with a nod to the art deco period; a time characterized by a bold strong design with the use of geometric patterns and a generous dose of gold, black and rich inlaid wood without being fussy. Built in 1906, and just fully repurposed and renovated into residential units, the structure is a fitting anchor to the south side of Market Square. Only one block from the banks of the Susquehanna River and adjacent to the UPMC Pinnacle Hospital campus; a few blocks from Restaurant Row, Strawberry Square and next door to the new Harrisburg University Health Science building, apartment living couldn’t be much more convenient!

The Menaker is a recently renovated building with very nicely done apartments with an art deco feel. Convenient location in downtown, walking distance to the hospital, several restaurants , and riverfront park/city island. Building maintenance is very friendly and responsive to issues. The downsides, and my reason for the 3 star rating, are 1) ongoing issues with the apartment hvac not being able to keep up with very hot or cold outside temperatures (leaky windows a likely contributor), 2) 2nd street being a playground for cars, ATVs, dirt bikes, etc with extremely noisy engines/exhausts (virtually no police enforcement for racing, cruising, etc), 3) the closest parking options being relatively expensive at $200+/mo. If I were moving back to the area, I would consider something in the midtown area where I think at least my second and third points might be less of a problem. Would require a few extra minutes to walk to downtown but for me that would be a worthwhile trade off.
