St. Louis is also a modern hub for medicine and biotechnology, with the Washington University School of Medicine and its affiliated Barnes-Jewish Hospital (the 5th largest hospital in the world). The Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center, the St. Louis Children’s Hospital and the McDonnell Genome Institute (a major player in the Human Genome Project) are also located here.
