Crane Mansion was built in 1906 by local Austin-ite, Frederick I. Crane. The heavy masonry construction method used to build Italianate/aesthetic style Crane Mansion was cutting edge at the time. The mansion features elaborate woodwork made from quarter sawn white oak, Birdseye maple and Honduran mahogany. The front entry and main floor porches feature poured terrazzo floors. Six fireplaces provided supplemental heating. F. I. Crane owned the largest lumber yard in the area and was also the mayor of Austin for many years. Mr. Crane and his wife were visionaries who played a large role in the financial expansion and cultural growth of Austin at the turn of the last century. They were contemporaries of the founding Hormels and celebrated and traveled together. After years of lavish entertaing family gathering, the mansion was professionally converted into 7 apartments in 1930.
